ACE Overcomers – Building Healthy Life Skills
Your Past Does Not Have to Determine Your Future:
What happens to us in childhood can shape how we see ourselves, relate to others, respond to stress, and navigate challenges throughout our lives. Understanding those experiences can be an important step toward building resilience and creating healthier patterns for the future.
Olive Charitable Organization is an authorized facilitator of ACE Overcomers, a trauma-informed program designed to help individuals understand the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), develop practical life skills, and build resilience.
What Are ACEs?
ACEs—Adverse Childhood Experiences—are potentially traumatic experiences that occur during childhood. These can include abuse, neglect, household instability, exposure to violence, and other forms of adversity.
Childhood adversity can affect far more than childhood. Experiences of prolonged or significant stress can influence emotional well-being, relationships, behavior, decision-making, and the ways we respond to stressful situations later in life.
Understanding ACEs is not about allowing the past to define a person.
It is about understanding why we respond the way we do—and learning that those responses can change.
What is ACE Overcomers?
ACE Overcomers combines trauma science with practical strategies that help participants better understand the connection between childhood experiences and present-day thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships.
The program moves beyond simply identifying trauma. Participants learn practical skills designed to strengthen resilience, improve emotional regulation, increase self-awareness, develop healthier communication, and make more intentional decisions.
The focus is not simply on what happened to you, but on where you can go from here.
Building Healthy Life Skills:
Through ACE Overcomers, participants develop tools that can be applied to everyday life, including:
- Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences and the effects of trauma
- Recognizing personal responses to stress and adversity
- Emotional regulation and self-control
- Self-awareness and self-reflection
- Healthy decision-making
- Communication and relationship skills
- Developing healthier coping strategies
- Problem-solving
- Building resilience
- Creating healthier patterns for the future
These skills can benefit individuals from many different backgrounds—not only those who identify themselves as having experienced significant childhood trauma.
Why Does This Matter to Human Trafficking Prevention?
Understanding trauma and resilience is an important part of Olive’s approach to preventing exploitation.
Past adversity does not cause someone to be trafficked, nor does experiencing trauma mean that someone will experience exploitation. However, traffickers and other exploiters may intentionally identify and manipulate a person’s unmet needs, vulnerabilities, relationships, or circumstances.
Building resilience, strengthening healthy relationships, increasing self-awareness, and developing practical coping and decision-making skills can give individuals additional tools for navigating difficult situations and recognizing unhealthy patterns.
Most importantly, prevention education should never place responsibility for exploitation on the person being harmed. The responsibility always belongs to the person choosing to exploit another human being.
Breaking Cycles and Building Resilience:
One of the most powerful lessons of ACE Overcomers is that adversity does not have to become destiny.
Resilience can be strengthened.
Healthy coping skills can be learned.
Relationships can become healthier.
Patterns can change.
Through education, practical tools, and support, individuals can better understand the effects of their experiences while developing skills that help them move forward.
Who Can Benefit?
ACE Overcomers can be valuable in a variety of community settings and with individuals from many different backgrounds.
The curriculum can be especially beneficial for teens and adults, parents and caregivers, individuals receiving supportive services, and groups seeking to strengthen resilience and healthy life skills.
ACE Overcomers resources are also used in settings including schools, family and parent education programs, rehabilitation and reentry programs, and other community-based services.
Evidence-Based and Trauma-Informed:
ACE Overcomers is more than an awareness program. Its approach has been evaluated by researchers at the University of California, Merced, with findings supporting improvements in areas including emotional regulation, psychological resilience and well-being, and quality of life.
The organization has spent more than a decade helping individuals, families, professionals, and communities better understand trauma and develop practical tools for resilience.
